Halloween 2006: Bacon Costume
I love making costumes for Halloween. If you’ve been to this site before, you’re probably aware of my Beaker costume from 2003 or the infamous Pacman costume (which drew in at least a thousand hits to this website this week) or last year’s Blockhead costume. I like to be something pop-culture-ish and recognizable. So, this year…
I was a Slice of Bacon
That’s right, folks. There’s not much else to say. It was a fun costume and probably the easiest one I’ve made in the last few years. It was also the easiest to wear, which was nice. Originally I intended on being a garden gnome, but I couldn’t quite figure out how to do it well enough. It was just two or three days before my parents’ big Halloween party when I realized that wasn’t going to happen. Then, Sarah suggested that I should be bacon since I love bacon so much.
So, I called Adam, who you see in the pictures, and asked him if he’d assist in making my body into a piece of bacon. Of course, he was up for it. So, I bought the foam from Hancock Fabrics in Mesa, AZ and the red spray paint from Michael’s Craft store.
There’s not much else to explain. In the pictures you’ll see how we assembled it. It stuck to my body by tightly fitting around my face. Eating was the only relatively uncomfortable thing I tried to do in the costume. The rest of the night, it was fine.
Oh yeah, I also couldn’t talk on the phone with the costume on because it went in front of my ears. Actually, it was a REALLY strange feeling that I don’t think I can explain. You’re going to have to try it for yourself. If you decide to build this same costume for a party, let me know and take pictures!!
Billy Bacon
I almost forgot to mention that I wore the costume to church on Sunday and took on the persona of “Billy Bacon,” a Southern-American, country music-lovin’ piece o’ pork. It was a blast. The kids loved it. I even sang a song with the lyrics:
Keep it greasy
I was a piggy
Now I’m tasty
You wanna eat me
Oh, Billy!
